Arrived when the lagoon was still pretty much empty and grabbed the last
front row parking spot. Rigged the wave board and 4.7 without too much
thinking - it was going to be windy, right? After a bit I noticed that
others around me were going for some pretty big kit. OK, some of them
wanted some security, but I began to doubt my choice. Anyway, it was done
now and I changed and set off for the outside. It did seem to be windy but
I was all over the place on the Rip. It didn't want to plane and there was
not room to bear away in the lagoon. Anyway, I ended up pretty much walking
the kit out of the lagoon and kicked off. Immediately it was clear I had
enough wind for sail and board. First run I cleared the rocks of the oyster
beds and set off, pretty tensed up, for the top of the harbour. I knew this
wasn't going to be a pretty session so was happy enough getting thrown at
the end of the gybe. And so it continued, with some big swell building up
in the middle, and even in the lee of the islands it was choppy. Going past
the first island there was always a big acceleration and often I was
overpowered and reluctant to bear away. Played in the swells wherever
possible and even managed a few ropey gybes. All in all it was a brilliant
if hard day. One of the windiest I've ever sailed. It reminded me of Jeri
or the Med. Knackered now.
I see that it reached 37 knots at Hurst Castle.
